Mine grow fine, but always wormy. Went to buying them at the Farmer's Market, grown locally, organic, and never wormy. Asked the guy how he does it- believe it or not, insect netting over the rows! Says its a fly that lays its eggs on the exposed part of the radish, and if you can keep the flys out, no worms! Guess I'll try it this year, if garden ever gets dry enough to work. I'll try the wood ashes, too, just to be on the safe side.
Plant them close enough together that they can't put out a full rosette of leaves- if they have to compete for air space, they'll grow a radish rather than just tops. Keep pulling the larger ones as they grow, so the runts then get a chance.
