Here are some reasons: 1. Often, the company that owns them gets 90% of the fine, the city gets 10%. 2. The cameras do not improve safety. In fact, the often cause MORE accidents as people brake hard and short at a yellow to avoid the ticket. 3. Studies show a two second longer yellow would improve safety more than red light cameras.
