I bought a lawn tractor a few years ago with a Briggs 16 h.p. twin with a broken rod (which took out the oil slings, cam, two lifters and the lifter bores). Bought a new short block, as there was no repairing what I had. Don't know if reman blocks are available. If you can find a complete reman for the same $$ or less than a new short block, I think I'd go that way. Might be worth checking ebay for parts, too. As long as the model, type and code match, you should be getting the same size shaft.
