Yes indeed a small 12 volt panel will work fine to charge/maintain a 6 volt battery. However you must use a low watt panel to keep from over charging the battery. I use a 5 watt panel I purchased from Tractor Supply several years back on a 12 volt application - 5 watt should be plently safe for a 6 volt. It should be noted a panel only puts out 12 volts at maximum sun and when the tilt of the panel is corrent for the angle of the sun. On cloudy days etc. my 12 volt panel may only put out 8 to 10 volts. Also current load pulls the voltage down. A 5 watt panel is about 14" square. The panels come in different types, I like "amorphous" since they tend to be cheaper, are not as critical as to the tilt angle and work better on cloudy days. The other types tend to produce more power per unit area however, I don't believe that is an issue for this applcation. If you want shorter charge times go with a 15 watt panel however you will need to disconnect it same as for a 1 amp trickle charger to keep from over charging the battery.
