Opinions will vary as to better. Straight shaft reaches under fences/overhangs better,usually has an angled gearbox at end which supports head better for use with blades or different option(s) Curved shaft units use a flex-cable(like speedometer)inside the tube,no gearbox at end as cable makes a bend and attaches to head assy.Some feel cable more prone to breakage under load than straightshaft units. My opinion-for common grass weed triming around yard,curved shaft string trimmer...If you have large areas of heavy weeds(bullthistle,tree seedlings,etc go with a straight shaft with ability to use chopper or blade head,beside string head.
