Are there any IH diesel engines that would fit an H without major modification? If so what modification would be required?

Dave: If you really want diesel and an IH diesel you have three choices, forget the exact cu in but from 340 tractor, D-188 from 504 exactly 2/3 of a 282 from 560 or 239 cu in from a 544. All those engines are 4 cylinder and should bolt up. The 239 may be a bit large for space, but the other two should fit in.

Thanks Hugh. I don't know if I'll ever do this but it's nice to know my options.

Dave: You really took a bit of heat over this. I guess I better not explore a pet project I have, that being to find a suitable diesel engine for my Farmall 130. I was thinking Farmall 340 engine as the gas engine will bolt up to a 130, never looked at the diesel. This is a very much on the back burner project. Like you I may never do it.

Thanks Hugh. I don't care about the heat. It's like going to Home Depot or anyplace where the proposition of what you're looking for is greeted by someone who thinks they know enough (read this as 'more than you do') to tell you what you want. Yup, they're valuable as collectables and I'd be the amongst the first to offer testament to the skill of their original engineering. On the other hand, there have been a lot of interesting things that have been done via an experimentation that made this and many other countries (Scotland - I may be in the minority here) great. Hell, one less perfectly preserved H out of how many(?) isn't going to cramp the H museum. Sorry, I got on a rant here. That and folks not getting close enough with their digital cameras to show you what they're showing you . . .

One of the best looking conversions I have ever seen was a 580 Case backhoe engine put in an H. It looked better than even the Continental placed in the 350. Good looking job and gave it a greater rpm range. Comes from just north of Readlyn Iowa ( North of Waterloo). It only caught my eye when I saw the small diesel tag on the tank.

Why would you want to ruin a good tractor? IMHO.

You could try a cummins 4bt diesel out of a bread truck? Or a small detroit diesel from a refrigeration unit off a semi trailer?

After reading your question and also the replys, one question comes to mind, why do you want to do this? An H Farmall is already one of the most economical tractors to operate ever built. I use an H equipped with a belly mower to mow my acreage, before the H I used a riding mower with an 8 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine. Believe it or not, the H uses considerably less fuel.

I certainly can believe your H uses less fuel than your riding mower. I have a new Simplicity mower with B$S engine. That thing uses a lot of gas. For years I used an IH 140 with a belly mower and for sure that used less gas than the Simplicity and mowed a wider swath. I'd trade it for another 140, but that is really too big for my current lawn mowing situation

I agree completely - I'm very pleased with the fuel economy of the H. I'm just trying to find out if this is a viable option if I'm ever forced to replace/rebuild my H's engine. One reason, I can't make gasoline.

My former co-worker used a Cub to mow 3 acres and he said it used less gas than his Cub Cadet to mow
the same 3 acres. Hal

the continental moter out of a 350D would work or our local repair shop used a diesel engine out of a 508 case back hoe it fit in the tractor with out legthining the frame or hood and even had the exaust come out the factory made hole it really looks like a factory set up

You could bolt a 282 right into a H,, but,, may have to lengthen the hood a bit,,,,, Chad

If you'd have to lengthen the hood, would you need to lengthen the frame rails? How are these engines in terms of reliability? Were these gas/start-diesel run or just diesel?

I mean the engine out of a 460-806. Use 460 frame rails, that will bolt right on the H bellhousing. Ive built a gasser like this, and would love to switch to diesel engine,, so I can put on a turbo,, or two,,,, LOL! Everything from the H bellhousing back, and the 460 engine back plate forward will interchange, and you can do it pretty cheap,, if you know of a good parts source. Ill give you a front bolster off a 460, you come git it! H starter will turn it, you have to adapt the H starter ring, to the 460 flywheel, no big deal to do that,, but, that is the easiest conversion to do,,, little hood work, or you could use the 460 sheet metal and make your own 460,,,,, Just sharing an idea,, otherthan the diesil continental they put in the 350's,,,, Chad

He means a 282 diesel out of a 450 diesel... It's a gas start/diesel run engine, same as the MD.

The Continental diesel out of a 350 diesel would bolt right in with no modifications, but these engines are rare and parts are nearly impossible to find.

I'm also thinking that you might be able to use the engine out of a 544 diesel.

It's always a challenge to find a serviceable engine that's out of a tractor for a reasonable price. Normally, you can get the whole tractor for less.

Yeah, I thought the whole-tractor-for-less option would be a front-runner. I still don't have enough experience (aside from some bombproof testament of low hours) to be sure buying a new used tractor wouldn't mean fixing a second host of problems. Any element that has parts that are hard to find steers me away. One of the reasons I bought the H in the first place is because there are so many of them. I just thought if there was an easy swap to a prevalent, sound diesel engine, it'd be an option I'd like to explore.

450 had a 281. 282 was the 6-cyl in the 560/660/656/706

Oh yeah... Forgot about that.

Wouldn't the smaller engine out of a 460 diesel be a better fit? Still too long, though.

The 460 has the same physical dimensions as the 560, it's just a shorter stroke.

I believe these engines were in the 560, 656 and 706 model diesel tractors. I think they had glow plugs to help cold weather starting. A true diesel (no gas to diesel switch)
