The top thrust bearing went out due to lack of lube in my 861D. The steering wheel and shaft screwed right out of the box. The bearing and race are about $30. Someone sells a teflon bushing to replace the bearing for about $10 but I've heard it's a waste of your time to put it in. There's a mighty heavy load on that bearing when you're turning and teflon is not up to strength.
Keeping that upper bearing (there's another exact duplicate in the bottom the box) lubed is the problem. When you add fluid through the filler port it runs through the bearing and covers it. If you have a leak in the sector seals the bearing eventually runs dry and fails. I don't thik you can just replace the filler plug with a grease zerk because the grease will follow the path of least resistance as it is pumped in and the p-o-l-r is up the steering shaft tube instead of down through the bearing. If I ever have to replace my upper bearing again I am going to drill and tap the steering box below the upper bearing and put a zerk in there. That way when I pump in grease it will be forced up through the bearing.
