I had the same problem on my 5000 SOS

When I got my 1967 5000 SOS about 2 years ago it was having a problem (and it still does) engaging R1, R2, 9 & 10. I changed the filter, fluid and adjusted the bands hoping for an easy fix which didn't happen. I e-mailed Larry about the problem and he confirmed that according to the diagnostics chart it was most likely a Clutch 1 problem but he said it was possible that the gasket between the valve body and the distributor was leaking. I pulled the valve body and replaced the gasket. I don't recall exactly what happened now but I remember that I had one heck of a time getting the shift cable back in place and I recall removing and reinstalling the valve body a couple of times. Any way, once I got it all back together it wouldn't shift smoothly. The shift lever would reach a certain point in its travel and it would hang up. I could force it to continue but I knew something was wrong because it had shifted smoothly before I removed the valve body. I pulled the valve body out again and turned the cable wheel by hand. I could feel the spot where the wheel got hard to turn and I observed that at that spot there was one piston that was being pushed into its bore by its cam. I disassembled the valve body and polished that piston with very fine emery cloth. I reassembled the valve body and the cable wheel turned freely so I put it all back together once again. The shift lever moved freely again. Why did that one piston decide to get sticky? I don't have the slightest idea because I didn't do anything except remove and replace the valve body.
I still have the R1, R2, 9 & 10 problem so I'm looking at a rear split in the future to see what's wrong with C1.
