Jim,

I did a little comparing with the parts book. The 39-40 valve cover had an oil trough to lubricate he rocker arms. A tube from the governor feeds the valve cover trough and drips oil on the rockers. 41 up used pressurized oil through a passage in the block. To solve that problem you would have to either replace the block or find a way to run a tube through the oil return passage in the existing block to feed the rockers. But don't know if the bolt pattern between the older block and newer head will line up. Either way, you would need to tap into the oil lines in the case.

The manifold is also different after 39-40 so you would probably need the mainfold to match the head installed. If you found a manifold used after SN 183971 (PN B2179R) you would need to replace the exhaust pipe.

If you change the block, looks like the upper water pipe and housing is different.

Seems changing on item would cause a domino effect.

It just occurred to me to check and see if the push rods changed. The rods and rocker arms were the same from SN 60000 through the end of production. The only real change I can see is with the camshaft at SN 201,000. Looks like the valve train geometry didn't change.
