Feel good about the troubleshooting though. It's pretty nice to know how to approach the old gal though isn't it? You'd be quicker to check that valve it you used it more. I use it all the time. I don't top off my tank. I routinely 'run out of gas', reach over and open the valve, and only then go back to the barn to refuel. I've got to where I remember what to do when she first stumbles and I can get the valve open before she dies...sometimes; a guy can open it from the seat.
I believe that's the way to go so the fuel is more fresh, the valve and the tank bottom gets flushed and I know it will work if I really get out there and need it, and now you give another reason; so I remember to open it at all.
