Does anyone use SELF-SERVICE to get their 8n fueled up?

I live about 1/6 of mile from a corner gas station. I was wondering if anyone here actually drives their N down to the store to fuel up. It sure would beat having to haul 10 gallons back every time I wanted to use the tractor. The only problem is that occassionally the station is busy and the intersection is not the quietest either. Now it is not like I am crossing an interstate or 4 lanes of traffic or anything, but I was just wondering what you folks do in your neck of the woods. Is it legal?

Anyone have any good stories? Do people ask you about your N? Thanks for the info.

Regards,
Andy

1/6 of a mile? Drive it there! Hammond, La. traffic can't be as busy as Danbury, Ct. If the image posted O.K., I have to drive at least a mile to this gas station on Rt.6. To the rear of the tractor is the interchange I-84 & Rt.7. Across the street from the gas station is the headquarters for Ethan Allen, their conference center & hotel. Down the street is Union Carbide's headquarters, on the other side of I-84 is the Danbury Mall, First Brands, FAG/Barden Bearing, Hughes Optical.... THERE'S A LOT OF TRAFFIC! Is it legal? It is here because it's a "farm" implement and so long as you have flashers or the warning triangle on the rear. Gee, Now all I need is a farm... Maybe someday I'll get one, the condo life is getting a little cramped.... ;)

It's 5 miles to the closest gas station for me buit I see a lot of tractors at the pumps there. There are a lot of tractors settong in drive ways at night here. The folks drive them to the job & work them all day & drive them home. From the little ones with loaders & mowers to the big 3& 400 hp tractors, those fill up a city drive way.

I drive my 8N to gas it up all the time.I usually leave her outside the store while I have a coffee. It sure gives the locals a reason to talk to me. Most just can't believe a biker on an old tractor. I've even been known to wear my blue overalls & straw hat. It's legal here.

Not many young ones, but lots of ladies over 60 talk about having an old "N" on their farms. When you look as "CUTE" as I do, ANY ladies starting up a conversation is good...DaBrow.

I have taken my tractor to the gas station often but it was always secured tightly on my trailer behind my truck. Too many hazardous drivers on my road. Here in FL it would be legal to drive the tractor if it carried the proper SMV sign and recommended lights. Also, you need to have a farm equipment endorsement on your drivers license to operate same on public roads.

Back when I was a children. I was trying to do serious farming with my 8N. One day I was plowing and my wife was in town. She was supposed to bring me some gas when she came home. She must have got held up in one of those mart stores because I was running a little low on gas and no wife in sight. This is no problem, the gas station is only 1\2 mile down the road on the other side of the rail road tracks. I am going down the road in 4th gear with the two bottom plow with my lift slowly leaking down. About the time I crossed those tracks going 10+ miles per hour the plow had settled down to about 2 inches from the ground. When the tractor bounced over the tracks it and the front plow made it across, but the back plow point proceeded under the rail. It went from 10 per to dead stop instantly. The only thing that went on was my hat. I was very lucky the only damage was the plow beam straightened (honest), the steering wheel bent when my legs hit it and some bruised legs and feelings. No damage to the gears, rearend houseing, liftarms or engine. If you don't think a stop at 10mph is tough try that some time. Now I can laugh.

Scott: it's darn good you weren't racing an approaching freight train with a plow, on an 8N. good story. and a good thing you didn't run out of gas in the middle of the tracks with the plow down too!! talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time! If it was me, the plow would have caught, I would have run o ut of gas, and I would be hearing the horn of an approaching freight. And, I wouldn't be thinking about my cast aluminum dash at that point, I would be thinking about my insurance policy that more than likely expired the night before! that's my kind of luck. 9N'er

It was a one train a week track so I wasn't to worried however an old drunk pulled right up against the plow and wanted to help me get off the track. I figured if I would have heard a train an 8N could have pushed a 53 chevy backwards down a dirt road. Still seems like yesterday.

I drive my 8N or 850 to the AMOCO if they need gas or take the JD Garden tractor and a trailer full of small cans if those are full.... BUT!! I picked up a big 300 gallon tank& stand at an auction last fall for $25.00 and will get it filled as soon as the ground is completly thawed.

I get gas at a service station about 300 feet from a farm road which is close. Have no idea if it is legal. Suspect that I am putting gasoline in a approved container. But I really don't care.

It is easier to get forgiveness than to get permission.

When you leave the office, take the Cisco hat off.
When you get home, put on the tractor hat, fire up the N and get down to the station.

I used to run to town for gas (about 1+mile). Used to take it to the hardware store too, and once, on a trip to the gas station, I decided to stop and buy some brats at the grocery store too. Why not?

It was fun until I got back on and at that moment, her bendix decided to depart this planet. Very embarrassing. Getting towed home was no picnic either.

But worst of all is hearing Tamra tell that story at least 20 times to my friends and relatives.

Here's a link to a post a few days ago re: speed and rpm for different gears. This might help give you an idear of how long it will take...if you care at all about that.

I've seen posts about hooking your brake pedals together for that kind of trip.

good luck!

Hi Dave:

>> I've seen posts about hooking your brake pedals together for that kind of trip. <<

That's an excellent tip. That's one thing I like about my 3000; it has a round bar that you can slide through the inner pedal to tie the two brake pedals together. Hitting one brake pedal while going down the road in high gear is guaranteed to ruin your day. Even if you don't wreck, you'll be turning around to go home and change your shorts before returning to get gas (no pun intended).

Common sight here in Salisbury, MO, pop 1,856. Local Sinclair station even sells leaded gas for old tractors and farm trucks.

Wish I could... I live 6 miles from the nearest gas station and it's a winding mountain road. Folks around there whip around the corners too fast, and I'd probably burn up half a tank just getting home. :-)

Hey Andy! I live 7/10 of a mile from a small country store with gas pumps. I only have two lanes to cross to get to it. My state requires a Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign on the back. Folks are used to seeing tractors around (I live in a farming community)so they are careful when driving around you and even wave. Go for it! It's a lot more convenient than lugging 5 gal. gas cans around.

For 1/6 mile you would be back with the tractor before you threw the cans in the truck.

I go to a full service gas station all summer.
It is about a half mile and I have to cross a busy state highway.
I don't do it in the winter as I have my chains on.
No sweat, and the first time I told the kid to fill-er-up I thought he was gonna lose it looking for the gas tank.
That was well worth the trip...

Not that far South, between Huntingtown and Prince Frederick, on the other side of the river.
