Dump AOL and Dump Amex. AOL for all the right reasons to dump someone, and Amex for their own brand of stupidity and abuse. I used to be chief pilot for an AMEX subsidiary. Flew for them for almost seven years. (Got ZIP from them despite 7 years of loyal service, when they merged us with another sub.) Got a new job. Several years later I got a divorce. A couple months later, I was sending my daughter to visit her mother and, in accordance with the divorce agreement, I had to have her on a particular airline flight for her mom's weekend visitation or I'd be in violation of the agreement. I presented my AMEX card to the airline, they asked me to speak on the phone to someone at Amex who'd flagged the card. I asked what the problem was, and the AMEX agent told me that a "derogatory" remark in my credit file has caused them to instruct the airline to refuse to honor the card and keep it in their possession. I asked them what kind of derogatory remark in my credit file was causing the trouble,..."Am I late in a payment, or something?" "No." was the answer. I wasn't late. I'd never been late on a card I'd had for over 10 years. I didn't have a past due balance. IN fact my balance was $0. It was completely paid. The derogatory remark was.....that I was newly divorced. !! That's it! (Grrrr.) My kid missed the flight by now, and I got chewed on by a judge who totally missed the point. (Still got custody of my daughter tho', because it was the right thing for her, and the right thing to do!.... the judge later ruled.) Drop AOL/AMEX. I did and life is much better.

Another AOL horror story. A few years back I purchased a new computer at one of those superstores. With the purchase I got a deal of $400 off the price by accepting a 3 year contract with AOL. The store never told me that they would automatically open an account for me. So the next day my son set up the computer and opened an account. After 5 months I noticed I was getting charged twice each month. After lengthy discussions and arguments with AOL I got no satisfaction. They simply robbed be of 5 months of service fees. The b..strds.
