I was thinking about converting my 12V, 2N to an electronic ignition. I read somewhere about a newer electronic system than initially released. If you were going to install an electronic system which one would you install?
Thanks

I have been using the pertronix unit for over 10 yrs. on my 67 gto that I raced. The reason i changed over was less hassle at the track, and consistantcy time and time again. I also ran colder plugs for more timing and could not afford not having the right spark. I locve going to the track and hardly opening the hood. That is the reason I will probably put one on my 2n. Now for the guys that have had them on their vehicles, the biggest reason for most (notall)is the clearance issues that are asked of it. You have to stay wthin those tolerances or you will fry one!

Since Pertronics is what it is an alternative would be to use the points to trigger somthing like a MSD blaster. The points are then only used as a trigger signal and last a long time. I put an MSD 6A capacitive discharge ignition on a 1965 4cy that was in a boat and it was great. I pulled it out and put it in a 1972 6cy CJ jeep and it was great. Once the plug fires you would think that is it, but a really hot ignition adds a ton of drivability. Don't forget that you can widen the plug gap to .05". I put the crossfire exhust on mine but would say a MSD would add the same amount of grunt. A hot ignition also makes the exhust not smell of as many hydrocarbons so you know it is burning more complete. It's a hobby so its OK to have fun with it and tinker.

The trouble is, a common ignition problem with "N"'s is breaker points that have oxidized or gotten a non-conductive film on them, while the tractor is sitting unused.

EXTERNAL EI systems still depend upon those points making a good, clean connection to trigger the EI box, so going the external EI route, triggered by the old-fashioned points really doesn't eliminate the root cause of many "NO-START" "NO SPARK" problems, the BREAKER POINTS.

Yea Bob, but with this set up very little current will be going thru the points and they stay clean and last long time. I just got off the phone with Davis Unified Ignition Company in Memphis. They make Hei distributers for all makes and are bad to the bone. The Tech in the back has been working on an ignition for 8N tractors but got side lined due to lack of intrest. Maybe if we bug them they will come up with a real ignition for us with just the right curve in it.(901-396-5782).

Stumpy,

Is the unit Davis is working on for a front-mount or a side-mount?

I did'nt ask because when he told me he was working out a clearance problem I assumed front mount. The side mount should be easy for them. I'll wait and bug them again. Hope others bug them too.

Well, a few years back, I got tired of constantly havin" startin" problems, and constant stoppage (which always occurs at the most inopportune/embarassin" times), etcetc. Went with the electronic ignition, and to this day have had no further problems! (But, I saved the stuffs I took off, so if the EI unit craps out, it will be simple to change it back) The tractor starts like a new car! Sometimes in the summer it is not necessary to use the choke! As a TRADITIONALIST (and cheapskate), I agonized about this step, but now I glad I did it! Of course the NEANDERTHAL NAYSAYERS will bark, but I happy! Of course I actually use these tractors for what they were designed 4, and when there is a crop in the field, one can"t be saddled with a unreliable tractor! My opinion ONLY, YMMV!! CC

Thanks everyone. I think I"ll let well enough alone and keep the existing 12V system...

Pertronix is the only game in town, AFAIK, for a front-mount EI kit that fits IN the distributor.

AFAIK, the Pertronix IGNITOR II kits are NOT available for the front-front units. If someone has newer information than that, please correct me.

The advantages of the IGNITOR II units are more geared to high performance, high RPM engines anyway.

ONE advantage of the IGNITOR II that WOULD be nice to have for these old tractors is that it
shuts down if a "blem" leaves the ignition switch "ON" without the engine running. That prevents possible coil and module damage from overheating.

If you want the latest info, give Pertronix a call @ (909) 599-5955. If they DO have something new, please post bacl and let us know. (They don't sell direct, but can refer you to a nearby reseller.)

I'd install the Blue Sreak points, condenser, rotor, cap, and front mount coil. (grin) (Just giving a hard time in jest. I'd keep it on the original points system, except convert it to 12v and use a 12v square can coil. It's been a great system on my 9N for several years now.) Or you can convert it to electronic, and then in a few days/weeks you can start posting lots of new questions on how to make your new electronic system work! (See all the archives on such problems.)

Once u get it workin' OK, there are usually NO FURTHER PROBLEMS! I had NO Problem installin' it on my side-mount N, and it has operated satisfactorily 4 several years! Either it works or doesn't !!

yeah CC..... ..yer a technical nerd (admit it, grin) and besides yer 5-nipple sidemount 8N distributor body has SPACE inside for all sorts of electronic ignition goodies. UNFORTUNATELY, Russ's 2N has the infamous 4-nipple frontmount distributor with 1-terminal squarecan ignition coil. A completely DIFFERENT and semi-difficult ignition system to the tractorially challenged non-tech shadetree mechanic. (which ain't you)..... ...Dell, who made his FIRST electronic ignition in 1962 (before kits) for his 12v 1956 Dodge D-500 HEMI-V8

Electronic ignitions are great for the makers, they can get 80.00 bucks for 3.00 worth of small parts. These miracal ignitions will flop.Had one do it in my truck.Talked with a fellow who was on module # 5 in his truck.I put new points in my ford tractor 15 years ago.Keep them clean and gapped and the engine will start..A good condenser will protect the points from metal transfer and burning and will last for years.A broken point spring will shut the engine down, but a new set of points can be had for 5.00 or less.

My 6 volt point ignition tractor sawed firewood for 3hours today. No argument, just a bunch of looney tunes that cant leave their tractors alone.Go get a job in a garage, this will cure the urge to fix things that aint broken yet...

No argument. eh?? LOONEY TOONS sounds argumentative 2 me! And furthermore, how do ya know I didn't have garage experience?? Seems like we have a fundamental difference of opinion here, so let's just agree 2 disagree, OK?? U do ur thing, and I'll do mine! NUFF SED!!CC, who just wants peace!! AND A RELIABLE TRACTOR! I don't have time 4 unreliable equipment, when there is a crop in the field! So. let's drop the whole argument!!
