1940 9N seems to be blowing a little oil out of the top of the air cleaner assembly. I cleaned the screen mesh at the top and will put new oil in bowl when I am finished. I have the air cleaner assembly off the tractor and am attempting to clean the "element retainer". My manual says I can remove the "element retainer" out of the bottom of assembly. I see three or four push clips but when I have not had any luck when applying pressure. I can see the bottom of the "element retainer" and it appears to need cleaning. Does it come out? How? Can I leave it all assembled and wash in gas? If it does come out can I buy new?

Thank you Joe (IN) & Indiana Jones. I have the air filter apart and I have 5 rolls of wire mesh material inside. How best do I clean? Hot water with soap, gas? Surprisingly, they seem to be in pretty good shape. Bottom most roll was a little dirty, the rest are pretty good.

Also, why would my air cleaner assembly be blowing oil in the first place? Where exactly is it blowing from? That is the reason I began this project of cleaning my air cleaner assembly. I have oil on the side of the tractor where the assembly mounts, on my choke linkage, throttle linkage, battery cable and the outside of the air cleaner assembly.

It might take a little patience and fiddling, but the retainer you see in the bottom of the air cleaner housing (above the oil cup) will come out. Sometimes you've got to do unpleasant things to the tabs, but they will straighten back out. Once the retainer is removed, there will be two rolls of filter mesh above it. Pull those out and soak them for a couple hours is gasoline, mineral, spirits, etc. While, they're soaking, wash the housing out good. Afterwards, remove the "hair pins" that keep them rolled up, unroll them, and let them air dry. Roll 'em back up, stuff 'em in, snap in the retainer, and you're good for another 20 years. It's not a bad idea to replace the cork oil cup seal while you're at it.

Joe, still learning just how to use this forum. If you get this message please look at my last posting moments ago under same subject. Wondered if you might be able to answer a couple more questions?

Have you tried searching the forum archives?

This post is about an 8N Air Filter, but there's bound to be other posts out there...
