I love it when someone comes to get me because a car won't turn over, and when I get there I don't hear anything at all when the key is turned.

Oftentimes the solenoid is only mildly stuck and can be freed by lightly tapping the starter housing with a broom handle, screwdriver handle, etc.

(Nothing metallic. And not too hard. The magnets in modern starter motors are supposed to be very fragile. I don't know if that's true or not, but discretion, etc.)

If the car DOES start when you tap the starter, the uninitiated think you're a genius. I usually give them a grin and say, "It's all in knowing WHERE to tap!"

I especially enjoy performing this trick for a young woman after her boyfriend has given up and is ready to call a tow truck...nothing like it!
