As I was performing the "tests" suggested yesterday about the whirring starter, my wife came out, & with hand on hip, said: "I found something on the tractor board ya might wanna look at". I came in to find this post from Dell on the same subject, last year.
"ya ain't gonnnna like this answer, but its the truth. 4-cylinder engines tend to stop at the same-place. Everytime you engage yer starter bendix, just a little-bitt of the flywheel mounted starter ring-gear teeth wear. Eventually, the ring-teeth wear enuff that even NEW bendix drive teeth won't engage, and therefore the starter motor whirrs. Cheap work-around is to manually rotate the engine crankshaft about 1/8 turn to fresh sharp flywheel teeth. ...BUT... eventually yer gonnna haffta byte the bullett and split yer tractor and replace yer flywheel mountes starter ring-gear. ($20, cheap)

N.B....engine crankshaft always turns clock-wize. And as pointed out, you can move yer crankshaft by pulling thru on yer fan-blade. (caution: sharpie-sharp) ..... ..Dell". I guess my wifes discovery is gonna cost me about $300+ bux! Dang wimmin! LOL

Before you decide you need to split your tractor to replace the ring gear, take your starter out! If you're lucky you may just need a new starter drive. I'm sure you remember the trick about putting the nuts on the long, long bolts so your starter doesn't fall apart. If you are REALLY lucky someone has already enlarged the starter hole so you won't have to disconnect the oil filter etc to get the starter out.
I had the same situation as you did once - starter whirred merrily but didn't crank the engine - and it was the starter drive that was shot. In fact it had fallen into the bell housing, where it still is today.....lol
So don't give up hope yet until you've pulled the starter.

I turned the fan 1/8 of a turn as suggested & hit the starter button. It sounded like it was gonna start for a second, & then.. {{{{KER-CHUNK!}}}} What the hellwuzzat? Did I really tear something up?

You may have some really bad ("folded over") teeth in the ring gear, and when they "came around" to the starter drive, the drive may have been broken.

You need to have a good look at ALL the flywheel teeth. Remember, the drive engages from the BACK... the toughest area of the teeth to see.

Bar it over a little at a time, and examine ALL the teeth. A "snakelight" and an inpsection mirror will come in handy.

Also, the pinhole location in the starter shaft may vary, depending on what drive it was made for. If you swapped drives around, the drive may not have been where it needed to be, "front to back".

Thanx, Bob.... in reply to Bob, 04-25-2007 10:18:26
I haven't swapped anything around, & I'm sure you are correct about the problem. I'm gonna pull the starter & check to be sure. I'll let you know what I find.

Thanx, Poot

Did you actually try the manual turning of the fan/crank to see if that was the problem ?

But at least your wife likes to read the board, and does your research for you. ;-) That's something to be thankful for.
