souNdguy is trying to tell you something important. You want to try to match the shifter position to the gear the tractor is actually in BEFORE you dismantle things.

So, you need to make your best guess as to which gear that is.

If the tractor is going pretty quick but is still controlable on rough ground to extent you think you could ''work'' in that gear, and you don't have to ''slip'' the clutch much to get it going from a dead halt, it is probably third.

If you have to give it a fair amount of throttle and slip the clutch quite a bit to get it going, and it is going so fast it doesn't feel safe except on a smooth surface like a road, it's probably in fourth.
