I need to remove & replace the engine cylinder sleeves (.090" thickness) on a 1941 Ford 9N. My manual refers to using a "crush tool". What is this? Can I remove the old sleeves with a hydraulic press? What's the best way or what method will work to get the job done. Help!!

I believe I have 0.090 sleeves. When I took the engine block to my machinist he recommended to bore the existing sleeves in situation. Which was done. IIRC the bore is 0.040 over.

Weld several verical beads at points around the inside of the sleeve. This will shrink them, and they will literally fall out.

Keep the arc moving, laying the bead FAST, so there's little penetration.

WHOOPS! Dan is right. I totally missed you had the thicker sleeves. You should disregard my screwdriver advice on thick sleeves.

The crushing tool was ONLY used for the thin .040" original steel cylinder sleeves. Many people machined their blocks out to the more desirable .090" cast iron sleeves at rebuild time. DO NOT attempt to split the thicker cast iron sleeves with a crushing toll or you will put nice long cracks in the bores of your block.

The best way to remove all sleeves is with a puller, and luckily there is a guy on the board who is making these tools for board members. Reach out to The Old Hokie and see if he can fix you up. Just click on the link below to a previous post and pics of the set.

Backfire in reply to Ken Kaiser, 08-12-2007 08:59:57
The intake/exhaust manifold, muffler and exhaust pipes have been replaced on a Ford 800. This has solved the exhaust leaks, however the Tractor now backfires (loud shot) when started. What could be causing this? How can it be corrected?

Thank you.
