Studs er bolts??

Ok..I got the head studs for my 8n at NAPA and was putting the head on and noticed all the studs are too short..they are 2 3/4" which is what the old ones are but the nuts only make up half way now..keerap!! I did run my tap thru to clean all the crud out and probably deepened the holes more than they were but even the studs that run into the manifold studs are too short? Anyway I marked the shortest ones with a sharpie and saw a 5 on the end..they were supposed to be grade 8's...tempered. I called NAPA and they said they would take em back but all NAPA studs are grade 5..thats not what I ordered and me and the counter guy both saw it..grade 8 in the catalog..so...they have grade 8 bolts 3" or 3 1/2" NC what is the verdict on using bolts instead of studs and if bolts are OK then what length.. the 2 3/4" studs were about 1/2" too short? Sorry this is so longwinded.

I all use studs if at all possible, I dont like it when you try to unbolt a head and pull a thread, happends to often on head bolts, like when the hole goes to the water

I heard legend that at a point in history Ford switched to stud bolts for the head. Now we are talking a piece of cake.

My 50 had all bolts, but that was not the first time it was apart.

I think they started with studs and around 50 or so switched to bolts.

Boy - do I know your situation. Click on the link below for my discovery on this. I ended up buying 3" long studs to replace the 2 3/4" stock length and it worked great. I discovered the new aftermarket heads are a tad thicker.

BTW - you can use grade 5 - that is what came on the tractor when new, and what you get today at the New Holland dealers. I am just @nal and prefer to use grade 8 on everything I replace.

Yeah thanx Dan but Ive already read that thread....GAWD it was painful!! And thanx for the info..om my way back to NAPA to pick up the 3" studs...they only have 12...can I use 3 1/2 " for a few or go back with some 2 3/4" like over the manifold studs and such..Im thinkin 3 1/2 " would be better if I dont run out of threads...but then I could use washers...lol.

You can ALWAYS use longer as long as you do not mind the excess sticking up over the nut.

Yeah thats what i finally did today...got 12 - 31/2" and 6 3" studs (all they had)...they all all covered up under there anyway by the hood and spark plug wire tube...all the 3" ones are on one side so it looks like its supposed to be that way...now back to the clutch.

I got mine from MAC's antique auto parts... he lists parts and required qty for the 1941 ford 4 cyl which is basically a n series engine. some were 2-3/4 some were 3 inch . However I have seen here that the aftermarket heads are thicker and require longer bolts/ studs.

There are reasons to use studs instead of bolts. However, I can think of no reason a grade 8 bolt or stud would be necessary. Gr5 will be more than strong enough.
