You all seem to know somthing about everything so I will ask. I have a troy built roto tiller and they say for the gear oil to only use GL4 140 or 85w-140, i cant find GL4 anywhere but i can find GL5. Will this work. Any ideas.

Thanks

API Gear Oil Service Designations (PDF)

To summarize those 12 pages the central difference between GL4 and GL5 service designation is that GL4 designation indicates a lubricant has anti-wear additives suitable for use with spiral bevel and hypoid gearsets operating under mild to moderate loads and speeds. GL5 designation indicates a lubricant with additional additives for use with spiral bevel and/or hypoid gearing operatiing under severe loads and at high speeds.
What's in your Troybilt ;-)

By the way that document is dated 1995 and notes that some test equipment needed to test for GL4 compliance is no longer available - perhaps why the designation is getting harder to find - manufacturer's are just skipping GL4 in favor of GL5.
