I'm getting ready to paint my first tractor, I've already got it primed and its just waiting for the topcoat. I got my J.D. paint from the local dealer, I think the can said acrylic enamel. Is this bad for you or are you o.k. just with a cartridge filter mask. Also can anyone tell me the best mixing ratio, and whether or not to use hardener, some people have said yes and others no. I've got an old tractor hood I'm going to practice painting first, any helpful hints much appreciated. thanks in advance for any and all help

Brandon, check the JD paint can for a 800 tech number. I know a few years ago, I had some questions and there was a phone # on the can and they were helpful.

Hi Brandon,

Your cartridge filter mask should be OK for straight enamels WITHOUT hardeners...but read any fine print on the label. You might also want to review the link below for a previous thread on respirator safety.

Great idea to practice on an old hood. Try it with the hood positioned vertically for the hardest test. Good Luck

What do you suggest as a good starting point for mixing ratio for paint.

Brandon,

My experience is mostly with PPG and DuPont automotive paints. I am not familiar with and have not used the JD paint that you have. I can only recommend that you follow the label directions on the can. Use whatever thinner, if any, and in amounts specified by the manufacturer. If unspecified, it probably is not recommended...manufacturers are the best source of application information on their products. For example, for one of the industrial enamels (alkyd) that I have used in the past thinning is not recommended at all, even for spraying.

Maybe someone else who is familiar with and has used this particular paint can give you something more specific.

I have had great success with the JD paint mixed with hardener. Usually the hardener is all you need to thin the paint to allow it to spray to a glossy finish. The only time I needed to add thinnner is if the can was open before and it thicken up a little. I hardener I use call for an 8 to one ratio.
