Well, They want $50 per quart of epoxy primer and $150 per quart of Concept 71310 to paint my front rims and pedistal on my 560D. Does this sound about right for the cost of paint? This does not include the labor. Lance

Hi Lance,

That price is extremely high. I think Jason is correct. Last summer I bought a quart of PPG Deltron DBU, bright red, for $86. The list price was $150/qt. I don't get any special price - the $86/qt was available to anyone who walked in off the street. The DBU is the basecoat equivalent of the single stage Concept in the same line. It should actually be a little more expensive than the Concept, although I don't know why. I don't know what pricing policies may exist in your area. It may be that you have no real choice if the policy of the shop you are going to have do the painting is to charge full list for the materials. I have no idea what shop policies may exist in my area since I have never had a shop do it. If your area is anything like mine you ought to be able to buy the paint yourself from a PPG supplier for a lot less than you have been quoted for that Concept. It may depend on the supplier, however.

See Jason's post that includes a ready-to-spray (RTS) cost analysis.

Concept is mixed 4:2:1 with reducer and hardener so a qt of red color produces 3-1/2 pts of RTS product. Unless your pedestal is a lot larger than I am thinking, it shouldn't take that much to do the pedestal and a couple of rims. At least see if you can get the leftovers - like unmixed color for your future use.

DBU is much cheaper than Concept. This is an apples to oranges comparison, however. DBU is a basecoat and Concept is a single-stage. DBU must be clearcoated and will be just as expensive as concept relative to the finished product...someone is not telling the complete story here...

Not here. A bright red in DBU (base coat only is $345 per gallon - additional cost for clear needed. A bright red in DBC (another base coat) is higher still at $365 per gallon - clear coat needed. A bright red in DCC (Concept SS) is $220 per gallon - no clear needed. Is this place so out of touch, relatively speaking, that the situation is really reversed? That's what you seem to be implying. Please clarify.

I've actually got 9 rims to do. They have all been sand blasted and were painted with epoxy today. I told them to hold off on the red for now and I will paint that later. I may want to have some of those rims painted IH white for my plow which I'm also restoring. The only reason I'm doing the some of the rims now is that I have to have new tires so I might as well do the rims first as part of the resoration. The tractor still has to have a clutch and TA before I do the rest of this project. It could take some time.

I wondered why you said rims and pedestal, now I know. I usually do that last, does not matter. As to the pedestal, that is cast, and altough you want a good job, cast will "hide" defects that will show on sheet metal, and in your case rims -- it just may not be as shiny. I'm saying that because if you do the cast yourself, you will probably be satisfied with it, and also save a bunch of money. Of course that's not true if you have no painting equipment. Also the epoxy your painter used has some sort of recoat interval, if he used the one for Concept, that is one week, after which it has to be scuffed AND reshot, before topcoating.

Haven't priced it locally, a couple of the web sites have it for under $70 plus shipping--see the link. I believe 71310 will be in the "H" pricing, not sure. You are going to need a minimum of a gallon of red, plus the white, unless you paint the tractor without removing anything -- I wouldn't.
