I have a Farmall BN with 6 volt positive ground system. Is it possible to convert the same generator into 12 volt system? Thanks

As the others mention below this CAN be done. However the generator will have a higher cut-in RPM, lower output and will tend to overheat if run at speed for very long.

If all you're planning to do is putt around a show or run in an occasional parade you can probably get by. However if you're planning to work your tractor at all a better plan is to get the existing 6 volt system back up to snuff, have your existing generator rewound for 12 volts, or swap it for a true 12 volt generator or alternator.

Note that a good working 6 volt system will spin and start a BN quite smartly!

It can be done. Replacing the regulator with a 12 volt reg, and adding a 12 volt battery, that 6 volt generator will put out 12 volts, but will greatly shorten the life of the generator. Your best bet, if you are determined to have 12 volts, is to go with an alternator conversion. On the other hand, a six volt system in good condition will do everything that needs done, just as good as a twelve volt.

Yes, it can be done. There are, however, a few limitations.

I copied this from an earlier post on the same subject.

The generator will supply 12 volts if you control the field with a 12 volt regulator. What you must realize is that the total power (Wattage) output of the generator will not increase. Doubling the voltage will halve the amps it is capable of. It will never have the output amperage capabilities of a 12 volt alternator.

For instance: If a generator will supply 10 amps output at 6 volts, it will only supply 5 amps at 12 volts. The wattage output is the same in both instances.
