Safety Kleen picks up my used waste oil at the shop, does not charge anything for it, and after they get it on their truck, they are legally liable to the EPA for any spills or such. That is what convinced me to let them have it.

JT, I beg to differ that S-K is responsible for your oil after they pick it up. The Feds have a cradle to grave law that makes you responsible until that oil is either recycled or burned. Keep all of your records about amounts picked up and dates. An enviromental company in N.H. went belly up a few years back and they had been picking up oil from garages etc. completely legal and licensed for years. They had not however been disposing of the oil but had been storing it illegally in drums piled everywhere on their property. A buddy of mine was charged for his share of the cost of the cleanup. 7 drums of oil over a 5 year period cost him just over 20,000 dollars. You don't have much choice in the matter when the EPA comes knocking.

A waste disposal Co. here did that too. Went Bankrupt, ran off & left thousands of drums of unknown chemicals. EPA spent years cleaning things up, all at the expense of the ones that had sent the chemicals to the site. One local school district had to pay thousands for lab chemicals they had sent. Then, several people made the mistake of buying the land at a County Tax auction... They just bid, because it was cheap, did not even know where it was... It seems that the EPA would monitor these disposal companies, to make sure they are actually disposing of the chemicals, instead of just storing them.

Yep - it's yours until it's gone, don't matter whos truck it's on, whos tank it's in, whos facility it's on, or, potentially, what wetland it got spilled into. Be careful.

Mechanic who just opened up his own shop has been collecting all the used erl he can. He has a waste erl burner to heat his new digs this winter. I've got a few gallons I'm going to take to him that I've been wanting to get rid of.

Just a little side bar, all storage tanks should be labled Used OIL not Waste oil.Waste Oil is a haz mat, used oil is not,at least that is what the EPA inspector told us.(he even gave me a hand full of decals to mark our 55gal drums with.)
