I have a JD 1010 Dozer with the track just about shot probably 20% left on under carriage. I have already turned the tracks around and replaced the back sprockets with newer ones. Still can;t keep the right track on. Is there any place to get better used tracks for this dozer? Hate to have to sideline the machine as the rest of the machine runs great.

I don't know if you're in Alberta or Alabama, but Jake Stobbe in BC, Canada could probably fix you up. He dismantles JD crawlers, phone is 604 888 2251. BTW the 420C track is the same as the 1010C, except maybe length. I bought Berco (?) tracks off a 1010 for my 420. They're heavier made than JD, but they fit the JD sprockets.

I'm not sure I understand you when you say you turned the tracks around. Do you mean you had the pins and bushings turned? That should give you another couple thousand hours service on a dry track. The other factors are the depth of the rails on the chain, and the amount of wear on the idlers. If the chain rails are worn down a lot, then it has the effect of creating a larger circumference to the chain. In effect, it acts as if the chain was stretched more than it really is. The reduced diameter of the idlers will cause the same. Adding a 1/4" diameter to the idlers will add a lot of adjustment to the track. Like the other post said, it would probably be best to go throught the cariadge and do the idlers, track frame rollers and carriers along with the drive sprokets and the chains..... but I doubt you want to pour 20 grand into the old girl....
So measure the chain rails for their depth relative to their wear limit, along with the idlers. That will probably be your biggest gain. The dealer can easily give you those specs. I would expect the idler radius weld to run you about a grand. Talk to your dealer who can recomend a qualified shop to do that work. That welding is not done freehand, but on a radius welding machine for best results. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. The dozer has been in our family since it was new. I'll do some measurements on parts aganist the wear limits, but I think it maybe time to sit her in the field and look for another. Heck another new machine will outlast me this time! Thanks again for the help. Mike

Mike, sounds like you need some undercarrage. That is the most expensive part of running a track machine next to fuel. Worn track chains get snakey like trying to push a loging chain. New chains are as stiff as a piece of plank when you push them around on the floor. If you turn when going over a bump you will land with your rollers off them. To get the most for your dollar you should do a complete job. Track chains, rollers idlers and sprockets. If you put on new sprockets the worn chains will sharpen the tips up fast because as the chains wear the pitch lengthens. Your bottom rollers are likely worn a lot too. Check out the aftermarket undercarrage shops in your area.
