Your symptoms may or may not be due to fuel starvation. My experience with a like vehicle (Tempo) would indicate that with this mileage the fuel pump may be due to fail. I replaced one with the lowest price NAPA pump available and that replacement lasted only about 10,000 miles. That was replaced with their better grade of pump. The details are fuzzy but the pump is a little tricky to diagnose because there are some timing devices that shut off power to pump if engine does not start and run. The Fords have the fuel pump safety switch in the trunk area, it is designed to open, when rear ended. That is one of the first things to check when there is a fuel problem. I have helped Ford owners limp home by just slamming the trunk lid,in the event of fuel pump failure. This may work because worn brushes in the pump motor reconnect. If you have spark, the timing drive is being driven, though it could have jumped out of time. The Ford 2.3 overhead valve engine, (not overhead valve with overhead cam) does not have a timing belt. It has a chain instead; I have not heard that this was an engine weakness. As far as I know none of the 2.3 Fords had an interference engine and therefore would not be destroyed in the case of timing drive failure. I expect 150,000 miles from newer 2.3 engines and 200,000 from the newer overhead cam engines.
