I would agree with whats been said so far, I don't see any cons with either tractors, unless they were to be put to heavy use, whereas one was better suited than the other, HP, D2 being designed for use with a dozer kit, tool bar with many ag attachments, where the R2, being gas less HP?, and not having track frame and overall tractor design included for those attachments, meaning the D2 did have that included with the design, well as I see it, might not be totally correct in thinking this.
Undercarriage for D2's may be NLA, don't think Berco or others offers it anymore. Unless you find good used, can rebuild what you have or can convert over to a later style that can work, D3 something to consider. Some years back a fellow on ACMOC in Canada profiled the complete rebuild of a 5J or 5U series D2, and provided photos of the D3 conversion, whereas there was a fair amount of work on the track frames, bottom rollers etc. There is no doubt you can rebuild one of these, just going to take some doing, once done, you are likely to never wear it out with part time use. Not sure about R2 U/C, just some thoughts.
