Leaky Hydraulic Pump?

I removed the distributor assembly from my Super M-TA and found hydraulic oil in the cavity where the distributor drive shaft connects to the live hydraulic pump. Do I need to replace a seal, or is this normal? If I need to remove the pump, how do I do it without messing up the timing? I think, from doing something similar with my H, that the gears will be misaligned, and I would have to "hunt and peck" to get it aligned again. Thanks.
