Your 7.54V reading isn't out of line if you're using a 6V coil with a ballast resistor between it and the battery. Try tracing back toward the ignition switch from the coil, and see what's there.

The ballast resistor is necessary for at least semi-proper operation of a 6V coil in a 12V system. If you're getting a weak spark, it might be you've got a 12V coil in there and don't need the ballast resistor (assuming you've got one). Please let us know what you find.
