Check all wires for fraying at the terminal ends. If any are bad cut off the old terminal and crimp on a new one. If the wire is no good then replace the whole lead. As far as the resistor goes it creates a 6V drop across it. If you run 12V straight to the 6V coil for long periods of time you could burn up the coil. I agree with the other post too, sounds like the resistor is suspect. For a few dollars you can put a new one on. They are generally wire wound types and the internal wires can get corroded restricting the current to the coil even more. If the tractor sits out much this could be a cause for that. Good luck.
