I try to keep my "H" original down to the 6 volt system. So, a resistor is never an issue with me. I do know that with 6 volt you have to keep everything electro mechanical up to snuff to make for easy starting. I've found my "H" easier to start with the crank in the winter especially if you are using a little heavier oil year round. My experience with a ballast resistor was on a converted 12 volt Allis"B". The problem was not with the coil. It seemed to burn out the points too quickly without an external resistor, probably due to arcing. I can see the same thing happening here. That's why a lot of cars with 12 volt systems and points during the 60's had resistors, I just changed mine on a 69 Plymouth.
