If you have a clearly visible leak that you can get to on the outside of the tank, I would use gas tank epoxy that you can buy in an auto parts store. Don't use just any old epoxy, some are affected by gasoline and will fail over time. I used a coating type of sealer on the inside of a tank 4 or 5 years ago. So far, so good. No sign of deterioration yet. That was for a leak that I couldn't get to because of mounting brackets on the bottom of the tank so there was no way to plug from the outside. If you use the tank sealer, follow the instructions faithfully and use the cleaner/etching solution they recommend. It takes some time and effort to go through the process, but, at least in my case, it worked OK.
