Don't think you would have to take the tranny cover off. Once you get the tractor split at the four bolts just in front of the transmission, take off the shaft coupling piece and then the seal holder,drive the old seal out and press in a new one. Anyhow that's the way it looks to me. I think you could tilt front of the tranny up and not have to drain it. My problem also started after changing the oil in the tranny. It was there before, but got much worse after. The tranny had this real thick stuff in it. Looked like half grease. It's not so bad that I can't put it off. Probably won't do anything until this fall.
