Kevin,
Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. Check the carb to manifold and manifold to head connections for bad seal. Squirt some WD-40 around each one and see if the idle smooths out. When it does, you've found the culprit. There may be several of them if it's the manifold to head seal that's bad. Phil
