Thanks for the info. I thought maybe the ballast resistor might be causing a weak spark and thus the miss. I'll look and see if I can find any vacuum leaks. However, I don't think there are any. The tractor has a Carter carb and it has a main jet adjustment, which I think means it may have been a distillate tractor originally, since the book shows the main jet adjustment only for the distillate tractors. Adjusting the main jet does not seem to have much effect, except it eventually shuts off the gas and the engine dies. I'll try opening it up. Also I had a problem with the carb flooding and I set the float pretty low. That could be the problem. I wonder what the correct setting is for the float. I've been think ing about buying a new Zenith carb, but was trying to avoid that if this one will work.
