Kurt: If the waterlevel is not high enough, the path for circulation is broken for thermosyphen type cooling. Can't be an air gap at the top. I wonder why gene said to pull the head so quick? After inspecting radiator\hoses etc..I'd power flush the engine as dirt\sluge can settle out and build up inside. Water pumps were an extra cost item back then. Late spark timing adds heat too. ralph
