Thanks guys for all of the quick suggestions. I think the idle situation is the run-on culprit. You are right that once the ignition is off the timing should not be an issue. I played with the idle adjust screw and found that I had it too lean which made the engine idle faster for some reason. I know it can be confusing because the idle adjust screw on a kerosene engine leans the oposite way. Anyway with the idle adjust screw out slightly further made the engine idle slower and I also made sure the throttle idle stop screw was out far enough to prevent increasing the idle as well. With the idle lower now the timing is only about 2 degrees from zero! I guess my faster than necessary idle was causing the advance weights to remain expanded to give me a false idle timing reading! I guess my advance weights were not sticking after all. The correct idle should cure the serious run on and backfire situation. I am using cool plugs (D15Ys) because when I operate my generator it is full throttle for hours under load. Thanks again. JohniH
