spark plugs on SM-D

why the odd design spark plugs on a SM-D? the plugs in the tractor have a straight electrode with a piece of bent round wire welded to the side(gap is on the side of the plugs not the end/tip). my plugs are fine, and will probably last for quite a while, but can i use standard H/M plugs if necessary in the future?
