You got a tough one there; I think I would pull out the plugs and try hand-cranking and see if you can still here the noise. If you can and you think it's coming from the engine, drop the oil pan and look up under there while someone turns the engine over for you. Since it quiets a little with clutch engaged it does sound like it could be a main bearing; hope it ain't.
