Pull front pulley on Super A

I need to pull the front pulley on my Super A so that I can replace the front seals. I purchased a gear puller from Harbor Freight only to find that it was too small.
How much force does it take to pull the pulley off and how do you protect the threads on the end of the crank from the point and the end of the thread rod on the puller?
