Gene, is this A C301 engine?
if it is you got me thinking about the Puffin noise, Is it blowing compression by the valves? did you run a compressiom check with it warm/ hot?
you can lean the carb down by installing a adjustable main jet needle off a "M"-400 or 450 this will pretty much tell you if you are having a rich mixture problem keep us posted we will stumble on the prob. eventually
