Andy, a few years ago I spent some time with the coal and steam boys learning how to operate the old traction engines. We did a lot of belting up to some threshing machines and the Baker fan. You are right on the money about the flat belt operation. Boy did those things make me appreciate red tractors with gasoline engines and electric starters! I have a video of some steamers running flat belt equipment in England and I noticed that they belt up very close, with very short belts. Any idea why?
