I just purchased another F-20 that the engine was slightly stuck on. After breaking it loose I turned it ove by hand with the crank and heard a similar noise torwards the bottom of the engine. I started the engine and could not hear the noise. When I shut it off I cranked it again and still heard the noise. I then pulled the side covers off the engine and looked inside. The front main bearing was the color of rust and oil mixed together, kind of like when you wire brush something rusty. So I believe you are right to assume that the noise is one of the mains.
