As you already know, that bolt, and most others go directly into the water jacket. There is no bottom to the hole. The bolts should have a sealant...I use teflon paste. The sealant will help control corrosion too. I hope you lost the threads to corrosion and not to over-torqueing. It is easily possible for over-torqueing to break the thin webs holding the threaded part, especially #s 5, 8, and 9 and possibly 12 and 15. A good straightedge will detect a bulge if this has happened. Don't ask how I know that. Well...I worked on one that had been to vocational school. Sneak up on the 45# a little at a time.
