I read the postings a lot, just getting into the Farmall 'hobby', but haven't needed to ask questions until now... I am looking to buy an early 1939 M (FBK3426), with what is supposed to be a factory front end. It does appear to have the tie-rods in the front, as a posting a month or two ago stated here. Guy and Andy's book (what a great resource!!!) staes that the option for a wide front was not available until Jan 18, 1940. I guess the production runs did not always flow exactly as calender years, so this is possible, right? Where would I find the casting numbers, to see if it is an IH original, and what would they be (if someone has that information). Also, it has the "sheet metal" seat post, which seems consistent with the S/N, not the curved steel which replaced it in late 1939. So there are several inconsistent pieces, which is not too uncommon for a 60 year old tractor! What else should I look for? Oh, and one more thing -- the front grill is painted white (no, it is not one of the long-lost demonstrators so much has been written about) -- how can you tell the "hood ledge front" type of hoods from the later ones?? Thanks everyone! Don I have a picture of the front, but am unable to attach it here -- I can send it to anyone who wants to look at it!
