When I took my distributer apart I discovered the weights and the pins they pivit on were totaly shot. The holes on the weights were wallowed out and the pivit pins were worn down to little twigs about to break off. There was so much slop, the weights were rubbing the inside of the distributor. The cam that rotates on the distrbutor shaft was frozen too. Make sure yours is not stuck. It only rotates a few degrees back and forth. This is where the advance comes from. Make sure all this is in good shape.Sounds like you are on to something distrubutor related the way you describe it. I bought another used distributor and made one good one out of two.
