Thermo-Siphon Question

If there is a leak in the cooling system, such as a hose that does not seal perfectly due to pitting on the water outlet, could this cause the thermo-siphon to not function?

My C started overheating, but before I have the radiator boiled out I want to eliminate this possibility.
