W-9 stuck clutch

I purchased a W-9 from my father-in-law several years ago. It has been in storage for more than 2 years now, and when we started it up, we found that the clutch was stuck (i.e. the tractor remained engaged even when we kicked in the clutch). One person told us that we'd have to tear the rear end apart to fix it ($$$). Another guy told us to drill a hole in the transmission case and squirt in some Liquid Wrench. Neither of these ideas sound good. Any ideas? Also, how can I keep this from happening again? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
