A lot of old H's have the end of the battery box cut out. Collectors hate to see even a battery box cut up. Yesterday I saw a nice H someone had cut a hole in the hood to accomodate an alternator. I'd put the box back and build a new one. It only has to be an inch or so high to keep the battery in even in rough ground. I know from experience. By the way, 12v will not burn out a starter, and for those that don't know, the starter will turn the right way with negative or positive ground. 8v batteries are great, especially for winter starting. But a tuneup is cheaper.
