Got a Farmall 200 recently, which had a lifetime of sludge built up in her. When I drained the oil, it practically came out in chunks. Took the oil pan off, and scraped about an inch and a half of dirt, dust, and oily sludge out. Interestingly enough, it seems that all that stuff had settled to the bottom, and I haven't found any appreciable sludge any where else in the engine, and the next oil change with detergent oil was very clean. I plan to change the oil frequently for the next few times, and of course change the filter with each change.
